This is a good example of a topic where it is worth avoiding simple promises.
B-carotene is an antioxidant and a precursor of vitamin A. Its relationship with the functioning of the reproductive system of cows has also been studied for years.
This does not mean, however, that each additional dose of B-carotene will automatically improve the effectiveness of insemination.
What does the research say?
A research review published in 2024 indicates that β-carotene may support reproductive function, including through antioxidant activity. However, the results of field studies on improving reproductive parameters are not entirely conclusive. Initial β-carotene levels, basal ration, lactation stage, and other nutritional factors are all important factors.
And this is exactly how it is worth looking at supplementation.
Not as a way to „inseminate,” but as a method of supplementing a specific ingredient in a situation where it may be needed.
When should you pay more attention to B-carotene?
The following may be important:
- composition of roughage,
- quality and storage length of feed,
- cow productivity,
- season,
- overall nutritional status of the herd.
In the current Rumint catalogue we point out that B-carotene deficiencies appear more often in winter and spring.
Fertibol B-carotene
Fertibol B-carotene provides B-carotene, vitamins and minerals.
The current application scheme assumes:
1 bolus a week before insemination and a second one on the day of insemination.
Active substances are released for 7 days.
This is a convenient way to individually supplement ingredients for a selected cow.
The most important thing: the supplement will not fix the entire reproductive program
Many more factors influence the outcome of insemination: body condition, energy balance, cow health, heat detection, semen quality, insemination technique, heat stress and herd management.
Therefore, valuable supplementation begins with the question:
What is actually missing in this ration or this group of cows?
This is a more credible approach than promising that one product will solve reproductive problems.
